BALI, PINUS PRESS - Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaya Purnama officially joined PDIP Party (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle) last Friday (8/2). BTP was seen wearing the party’s red jacket when he came out of PDIP regional office in Bali. He reportedly had a meeting with a few prominent PDIP figures including Vice Governor of Bali Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, Counsellor of PDIP Bali I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, Secretary of PDIP Bali I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, and Chairman of PDIP Jakarta Adi Wijaya.
“This decision is in line with my personal ideology,” said Ahok when he was formally introduced as a member of PDIP.
General Secretary of PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto was asked whether this new development does more good or harm to the party.
“The function of a party is to accept those who wants to join. Obviously we welcome Mr. Ahok as a member of PDIP and we should not be talking about the harms or benefits,” said Hasto. He said PDIP is a home for everyone, and he confirmed that BTP will not immediately take up any management positions.
Hasto denied the allegation that BTP’s new affiliation with the PDIP party is to push up the vote for PDIP’s own Jokowi-Ma’aruf presidential candidacy.
Novel Bamukmin, the official speaker of 212 Brotherhood Alumni, an islamic religious group which advocated heavily on BTP’s imprisonment back on 2017, said that BTP has the right to join any political party of his choice.
